Bruce Willis announces details for The Expendables 2

October 7, 2010

Bruce Willis is set to take a much bigger role in a sequel to The Expendables having made a brief cameo in Sylvester Stallone’s action hero movie earlier this year. Willis, who recently indicated he wants to make a fifth Die Hard film, said he has spoken to the director about a much bigger part in a new film.

“I talked to Sly and he's going for all the marbles this time, and he's going to get everybody in this time,” the 55-year-old actor told Comingsoon.net.

He continued: “Even Stone Cold Steve Austin who took two bullets in the last film, he's coming back, too. Hopefully, they'll start shooting it while we're young enough to survive.”

It is also rumoured that Stallone is hoping to do the same thing for Arnold Schwarzenegger who also had a cameo in the film.

Stallone rules out Expendables 2 recruits

September 21, 2010

Now that The Expendables has safely crossed the $100m barrier at the US box office, and now that the film has given Sylvester Stallone his biggest hit in a long, long time, the focus remains on the already-planned sequel. For Stallone has a job on his hands to top the cast from the first film and it's clearly something that's not far from his mind.

We already know that he's hinted, via his new Twitter stream, that he'd like Bruce Willis to have a more substantive part in The Expendables 2.

But the latest names being banded around? Well, try Mike Tyson for a start, whose hat Sly threw into the ring and then seemingly chucked it straight back out. "How tough is Mike Tyson? ........EXPENDABLES tough?", he asked, before later going on to post that "Always experimenting. Mike T is not a sound fit. In my life I have been wrong more then RIGHT but I usually get lucky when it counts."

So, who next? How about John Travolta, whose name has now been mentioned in association with the project? But when asked about his potential involvement with the film, Stallone replied "NO, DON'T THINK SO."

Yet, he does hint that he will look to use more UFC stars in the next film. And he's, perhaps jokingly, suggesting that Ryan Seacrest - a US radio and TV host - could make his way into the next film. The tone of the Tweets, however, you can judge for yourself: "RYAN SEACREAST [sic] is not want you think. HE is TOUGH as S---! He is in TEN times better shape JCVD and would most likely whip him. Seriously!", adding "Why would I put JCVD, and I do like him, in EXPENDABLES when I know SEACREST could destroy the one time great. ASK STEVE AUSTIN, he knows."

As things stand, Stallone is still working on the director's cut of the first movie, but his thoughts do appear to be very much with the second. And we'll keep you fully informed as fresh developments appear....

Expendables 2 Update

September 12, 2010

Earlier, ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down in Toronto with Basil Iwanyk, producer of Ben Affleck's new crime-drama The Town, out on September 17, and we asked him about the planned sequels to two of his big hits for 2010, Clash of the Titans and Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables.

When questioned as to what Sylvester Stallone may have planned for the sequel to the surprise summer hit The Expendables (which will probably be Lionsgate's second highest-grossing movie of all time very soon), we got a minor update. "I saw Avi Lerner this morning, who deserves all the credit for it," Iwanyk responded. "He really went on the line for the movie. He told me, 'We're doing a sequel, we're doing it right away.' I haven't talked to Sly at all about what's going to happen in the sequel. It's going to rock and you can just imagine in your head who will be in that cast in addition to the people who are there now. But I'm not sure. There's a lot of excitement and I know that Avi and Sly want to go at it as soon as possible."

"The thing about 'The Expendables' for us was that it was a movie we had at Warner Bros., and it was a dead project," he said about the background for the hit action film. "We had a lunch with Sly's agent and he said, 'Sly needs to go to work,' so we sent him and he turned it into 'The Expendables."

Why Bruce should do Expendables 2

August 31, 2010

Sylvester Stallone is moving forward with plotting a sequel to The Expendables, which has now grossed an estimated $82 million domestically. According to his Twitter page, he’s busy thinking of the most dangerous places to set the film and trying to talk Bruce Willis into playing its super villain. Reasons why Bruce should say yes:

1. The Expendables ($35 million) outperformed 2007′s Live Free or Die Hard in its opening weekend ($33 million), and Live Free or Die Hard was Willis’ best live-action, non-cameo opening weekend since 1998′s Armageddon ($36 million). Moral: Audiences like to see Bruce Willis blow shit up, and Stallone will most definitely hand him a detonator (or 20).

2. As much as we like the young guns in The Expendables, there was a different kind of electricity when Stallone and Willis shared the screen. They are equals. And that makes for a good antagonist.

3. We’ve already established that Bruce’s character in the Expendables world is bald. We like him bald.

4. We’ve been trained to root for Bruce in action films. Having to root against him — interesting.

5. If this kind of ensemble movie doesn’t live up to expectations, fans will be disappointed (see: 2004′s Ocean’s Twelve), but we will get over it (see: George Clooney’s career since then). You’ve really got nothing to lose. Have fun, Bruce. Go play with Sly in some jungle.

Jason Statham so excited about Expendables

August 27, 2010

The Expendables star Jason Statham has revealed that he “got so excited” about doing the new movie after being approached by “cinema god” Sylvester Stallone.

Statham, 37, stars alongside veteran action-movie heroes Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren and Bruce Willis in the new movie, which Stallone co-wrote and directed.

Asked how he got the role, he told OK! Magazine: 'I got a call and was asked if I'd have something to eat with Sylvester Stallone because he wanted to talk to me about the film.”

He added: 'He is like a cinema god! I grew up watching films like Rambo and Rocky. I think Sly is as big as they come. He is the most recognised film star in the world.

'I've seen all his movies. I'm very familiar with everything he's done. That's why I got so excited about doing this film.'

Inferno: The Making of The Expendables

August 21, 2010

EPIX, the premium entertainment channel, video-on-demand and online service, will follow up the highly anticipated August 13th release of retro action film The Expendables with a 90-minute behind-the-scenes documentary. Premiering August 21 - 10.00PM EDT , Inferno: The Making of The Expendables takes viewers inside the massive undertaking that marks the return to the big screen of stars who defined the action film of the 80s and 90s.

In Inferno, Oscar®-winning actor, writer, director and producer Sylvester Stallone provides an unprecedented look at his career, producing and directing methods and complete access to the filmmaking process. His candid revelations about the price, both mental and physical, of being a film action hero underscore the fragility of stardom and the tenacity of one of Hollywood's biggest stars. Reuniting some of the biggest names of the action genre (Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Steve Austin, Randy Couture and Eric Roberts), The Expendables will introduce a new audience to the action blockbuster, the precursor to today’s superhero and comic book movie extravaganzas.

“I want you to see the guys while they are sweaty and hurting; the confusion, the mayhem, the solidarity and perseverance,” said Stallone, describing his approach to the documentary. “We’re only around here one time, one trip, so you better make the best of it.”

“This is in no way your typical behind-the-scenes fare,” said EPIX President, Mark Greenberg. “Inferno is an honest, tough look at the process and rigors of filmmaking and Hollywood.”

Why Van Damme & Seagal Wouldn't Do The Expendables

August 17, 2010

When news about The Expendables -- an action movie that would bring together stars like Sly Stallone, Jet Li, and Jason Statham -- hit in 2008, we wondered who else would join the ensemble affair. By the time Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture signed on, it was clear Sly was digging lots of old and new-school names out of the woodwork. But even after Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to make appearances, some names didn't, specifically Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. Was there just no room for them, or was it something else?

According to another British "report" -- quotations used because these things only seem accurate maybe half the time -- Sly says the two '80s action stars weren't involved because the lacked the right sense of humor.

WENN shares a report from Britain's Sunday Times, where Stallone says: "I wanted to set Jean-Claude against Jet Li, but he didn't want to lose to Jet. He didn't think that was cool. But that's why it would be cool; to have Jean-Claude beaten by the other man. Hey, they could have a rematch. But Steven Seagal and Van Damme, they weren't really into our gallows humor."

Refusing to lose on the big screen may have kept the masses from seeing Van Damme beat down by Li, but it also kept him, and Seagal away from a number-one movie, which is something both aging stars could use right about now. Though, by the same token, it has kept them from a film chastised by many action film fans.

Did they make the right decision? Was the film missing the smarminess of Seagal and Van Damme's kickboxing ways?

Expendables Tops at Weekend Box Office With $35 Million

August 15, 2010

“The Expendables” topped “Eat Pray Love” for first place at U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, earning $35 million for Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.

“The Expendables,” directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone, showcases an ensemble cast including Jet Li, Steve Austin, Jason Statham and cameos by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The action-film is Lions Gate’s first to debut at No. 1 since the superhero comedy “Kick-Ass,” which was released April 16.

“It was a terrific opening for Stallone and it shows there’s still a market for old-fashioned action movies even if the main star is approaching retirement age,” said Gitesh Pandya, editor of Box Office Guru LLC. “If you have macho men, guns, and things blowing up, then you’re going to find an audience.”

The Expendables movie review

August 13, 2010

"The Expendables" is the first team–up movie of the summer season to get the merciless mercenary formula right.

"The A–Team" was awful, "The Losers" was a debacle but "The Expendables" is action–packed, laugh–out–loud funny and altogether watchable.

Directed and written by gun–toting cinema stalwart Sylvester Stallone, this blood–soaked testament to muscle–bound masculinity is as entertaining as it is simplistic.

A mishmash of pokerfaced ruffians, Barney Ross (Stallone), Ying Yang (Jet Li) Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) and Toll Road (Randy Couture) make up The Expendables. When Ross' brother Tool (Mickey Rourke) tells the crew about a potential one way ticket of a task, Ross and Christmas decide to do a little recon.

Five minutes into this film the snickers and sighs of my fellow movie critics turned promptly to uproarious laughter. In one of the best cameo conversation sequences ever conceived Ross and his arch rival Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger) have a caustic quip battle like two aliens spitting acid at each other's tough guy casings. Sly and the Governator have it out in a beautifully ironic dialogue while a mysterious man named Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) looks on.

Willis steals the limelight with his trademark sarcastic wit and takes this film to heights of hilarity that can be enjoyed by anyone who wasn't in a coma during these three actors' action heydays.

Church sets up Ross and his crew with the tall task of dethroning an oppressive dictator (David Zayas) on the fictional island of Vilena. From there it's all out carnage laced with cheesy one–liners and loads of explosions.

Is "The Expendables" going to win any Oscars? Don't count on that. Is this film Stallone's answer to a modern–day "Dirty Dozen? Not quite. Is this a movie that will have you digging a sizable hole in your tub of heavily buttered popcorn? You can bet the bank on it.

"The Expendables" is a hack–em up action film through and through. Sly and crew blow hordes of gun clad goons to bits in a style that is akin to the latest "Rambo" installment. Those of you with weak stomachs be warned, if you have a rough time handling images of wartime butchery and vivid depictions of torture this film is not for you.

For those who are desensitized enough by daily doses of violence on television, in video games and on the silver screen, by all means find a seat, turn your brain to Neanderthal and have a ball.

Stallone: I'm contemplating an Expendables sequel

August 11, 2010

With pre-release surveys for "The Expendables" indicating huge levels of excitement among male filmgoers, director Sylvester Stallone says he's ready to roll on a sequel if investors are willing.

"If this does perform, I think it will open a little more liquidity in funding the sequel," he said. "I have an idea ready to go. People think doing a sequel is easy, but it's not because you need the element of surprise. I'm going to try to do something that's quite radical."

Stallone offered few specifics on what that radical idea might be, but the hyphenate isn't shy about what "Expendables," which is poised to open north of $30 million this weekend, means for his career. In an interview for a story that ran in today's Times, Stallone said he first pitched the movie, which he also co-wrote, at the American Film Market more than two years ago. AFM, held in Santa Monica each November, is traditionally a bazaar of sorts for movies starring actors a little past their prime domestically but well known overseas. But Stallone, who still has plenty of cachet internationally, initially couldn't find investors for "The Expendables."

It was only later in 2008 that independent financier Avi Lerner stepped up to cover the movie's $82-million budget, most through foreign presales. In addition, Lionsgate paid nearly $20 million for rights to distribute the movie in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain.

Of course, big expectations don't always result in big results at the box office, as Lionsgate learned the hard way with "Kick-Ass." But Stallone, who admits he's as nervous as he has ever been before a movie opened, said his fears are eased a bit when he remembers that he broke his neck doing stunts on the set of "The Expendables."

"It's a good omen," he explained. "I didn't get a hangnail on the set of 'Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.' "

Sylvester Stallone and part of the 'Expendables' cast was on hand last night in France for the Paris premiere of 'Expendables: Unite Speciale'.The movie release was at the Le Grand Rex and the fans were definitely excited to see the celebrities as they screamed.

While the movie doesn't open for another week in the United States, the press the actors are doing internationally definitely will be part of the big international opening as well. Interestingly those celebrities who care about the biggest picture of their fans and careers like Sly take time to really get out and see the fan base.

Lundgren Talks Expendables and The Return of Action Movie

August 6, 2010

The idea of seeing Rocky and Ivan Drago back together on the big screen is every fan boy's wet dream. While it's highly unlikely that the characters themselves will be back for a rematch, Sylvester Stallone did the next best thing by casting his old Rocky IV foe Dolph Lundgren in the machismo fueled ensemble action flick The Expendables.

We had the daunting opportunity to sit down with Ivan Drago/He-Man/The Punisher himself to talk about the return of the action movie, reuniting with Stallone and his old films being remade.

'I hope they appreciate the old school feeling of tough guy friendship and camaraderie, having fun together doing things together for each other, I think that's what's at the heart of this picture.' Lundgren told us about the audience for The Expendables. 'I think those things are important, respect and honor. They sound old fashion but they're important and that's what a lot of Stallone movies are about.'
